The Ask Josh Thread

Got the Federal portion of my tax return today and ordered my new computer.  It's been four years, so it's about time.

Here are the specs!

Pretty jazzed for this!

I will, yeah.  I'll either have some help doing it or do it on my own.

I've always wanted to be able to put together my own computer, but I got no skills in it.

Or at least LIMITED skills.

J, I'd like to talk to you more about this as I go through the process of getting a new computer.

Sure, man.  The biggest thing is always going to be identifying your needs with regards to a computer.  I'm always up for nerd discussion.

I love building my own computers. Sean and I have a kick-ass desktop. We upgrade as we have the money/need, and while nothing is at the top of the line all at once, we're never unhappy with our box. I've helped him with our computer so many times that my next goal is to build my own from scratch. :)

I've never had a top of the line computer either until this one.  It's always been sort of a hodge podge of just below top of the line stuff.  I figured I'd go for it now, since the price wasn't tooooo awful for what I'd be getting.

My dad does this.  Basically when we got our first desktop back in the mid 90's (a compaq PoS) - he crashed it so many times and then went through new parts... so he started replacing things here and there.  NOW?  He totally frankenstein's desktops.

He goes on Ebay and other sites to get components.  He's made desktops for him and my mom, and my sister and 2 extras for her 3 kids to share.

It's so much cheaper to do it that way than buying comparable pre-made computers, and the parts/support you get are generally much better in quality.

It's also a huge sense of accomplishment, for me. When the computer is better because WE DID THAT, it's awesome. When everything clicks into place and suddenly you've got a machine that can run Crysis, it's awesome.

Or, y'know, you can get a Dell.

Plus it gives my dad a hobby.  He was a mechanic when he worked.  So this gives him something to do.  Works with his hands.  Puts stuff together.

I have the skills and yeah I would love to custom build a super pimp system. Maybe one day when I have a job that doesn't make me so mentally worn that I can actually THINK straight most days.

I know I've mentioned it in some other threads, but I'm living in my garage mancave at my grandparents while I help take care of my grandad.  I took some pictures of my workspace today to show some other people, figured I'd post them here.
