MineCraft

Does anyone here play MineCraft?

My nephew loves it, I've never played, but to have something additional to talk to him about, I wanted to give it a try.

Nobody?

I started playing yesterday, and it's kinda fun.

I'm surprised that with all the Lego fans we've got here, that no one's into it.

It's a little bit like Legos.

When you start the game, you either do Creative Mode or Survival Mode

Survival Mode

You get (somewhat) randomly placed into a world with grassy hills, some mountains, trees, rivers, beaches, mines and snowy areas. It's inhabited by wolves, chickens, pigs, large spiders, a few other small creatures, and then some "mobs", or baddies, which typically show up at night:
- skeletons
- zombies
- creepers

Essentially, you have to survive.

You have health, and you have a hunger meter.  As you fall down from places or get attacked by creatures, your health goes down. If your hunger meter hasn't run out, it'll fill back up as you rest.

Typically people will create dwellings for themselves, but you have to collect the materials.  You can dig the ground around you to get dirt squares, which you can stack up like legos to build a dwelling. Leave a space for windows or a skylight, though, because you can't see anything if you don't let sunlight in.

You can also chop down trees to get wood, which you can use to do a ton of things, including:
- build a house out of the blocks of wood just like you did with the dirt squares
- break down the clumps of wood into planks
- break down the planks of wood into sticks

The sticks are used for a ton of things. put two sticks together and put a rock on the end and you get a shovel. Put three rocks together and hook it to sticks, and you've got a pick axe, which can be used to help you get rock to build with (or mine other materials).

The interesting part to many is the crafting. Different materials combined together in various ways will create tons of different things, including doors, pistons, torches, bow & arrow, fences, stairs, beds, etc. It's crazy complex.

In Creative Mode, you get unlimited supplies, which allows you the opportunity to build all sorts of crazy dwellings, traps, etc.

You can either play this game alone on your computer, or you can get together with friends (and/or strangers) and play online on a server.

it's like $28 to buy, and it's free to play online, and if you want to setup your own server, it's actually not very hard to do.

It was just released on Xbox Live a few days ago for 1200 Microsoft Points and I picked it up.

That said, I have... no fucking clue how to play it.  Any advice for someone just starting out in this game?

walk up to a tree and chop it down with your hand (hold down the button until it disappears)

keep doing that until you've got eight wood pieces.

go into your crafting mode and put one piece of wood in, and it will give you planks.
you'll need to take the planks and put it in all four corners of the crafting block to build a crafting table.

put the crafting table somewhere you'll remember it (near where you respawn).

use wood planks in the crafting table in every space except the middle, which makes a crate to hold things in.
place it next to the crafting table.

if you put wooden planks into one spot on the crafting table, it gives you sticks.
THESE ARE ESSENTIAL.

crafting table, imagining the grid as a phone:
stick in 5
stick in 8
wood plank in 1, 2 and 3

That creates a wooden pick axe
you'll need this to dig out stone

get more wood and such

also with the crafting table:
stick in 8
wood plank in 2 and 5
that creates a wooden sword, which will help you stop zombies and spiders and skeletons

dig the ground to create dirt blocks. Make yourself a shelter. Best to dig a hole in a wall.
you'll need a door... that's sticks in the crafting table:
1,2,4,5,7,8

place the doorway in your shelter so you can get in but zombies can't.

also, google Minecraft wiki, it'll help you see how to "craft" things. I'm not an expert on it yet.

Actually, you get it from the producer at the store.  I don't think they have it on Steam.
